athletics - hammer throw: a thriller with happy end

Gestern war ein sehr spannender Abend für die Deutsche Leichtathletik Mannschaft in London: Otto und Holzdeppe holten sich Silber und Bronze bei dem Stabhochsprung und Betty Heidler gewann die Bronzemedaille beim Hammerwurf. Aber es waren ihre Schiedsrichter, die für das Krimi mit Happy End gesorgt haben: irgendwie war ihr Hammer-Hammerwurf nicht gemessen oder doch gemessen und die Daten waren verloren… sie hat zuerst einen extra Wurf bekommen, dann hat man die Daten doch gefunden, waren aber nicht ihr zugeordnet und am Ende war das alte gute Messband, das die Distanz bis zur Spur auf dem Gras gemessen hat und Betty konnte ihre gut verdiente Medaille bekommen. Zum Glück sind die Hammer so schwer, dass die Spur so lange nach dem Wurf noch sichtbar war. Mit dem Speer hätte es wahrscheinlich nicht funktioniert.

Oh! und Bahamas gewann das 4x400 m Rennen bei den Männern. Das war auch eine Freude: so ein kleines Land vor allen anderen Großen.

Ayer fue una noche emocionante para el equipo alemán de atletismo en Londres: Otto y Holzdeppe consiguieron la plata y el bronce en el salto con pértiga y Betty Heidler ganó la medalla de bronce en el lanzamiento de martillo. Pero fueron sus árbitros quienes se encargaron del suspense con final feliz: resulta que no midieron su super-lanzamiento de martillo, o sí lo midieron pero perdieron los datos… primero le ofrecieron un lanzamiento adicional, luego encontraron los datos en el sistema, pero parece ser que no estaban adjudicados a ella y al final recurrieron al viejo método de la cinta, con la que midieron la distancia hasta la huella en la hierba y Betty se pudo llevar su bien merecida medalla. Menos mal que el martillo es tan pesado que la huella todavía era visible en el césped. Seguramente con jabalina no habría funcionado.

¡Ah! y Bahamas ganó la carrera de 4x400 metros hombres. Eso fue también un placer: un país tan pequeño por delante de todos los 'grandes'.

Yesterday was a very exciting evening for the German athletics team in London: Otto and Holzdeppe got silver and bronze at the pole vault and Betty Heidler won the bronze medal in the hammer throw. But it was her referees who provided the thriller with happy ending: her great hammer throw was somehow not measured, or it was measured but they lost the data ... first she got an extra throw, then they did find the data in the system but it was not assigned to her and at the end it was the old-fashioned tape that measured the distance up to the track on the grass and Betty could get her well-deserved medal. Fortunately, the hammer is so heavy that the track was still visible after such a long time. It probably would not have worked with the javelin

Oh! and the Bahamas boys won the 4x400 meters race. This was a pleasure too: such a small country in front of all “big ones”.
